Douglas X-3 Stiletto - 1:72 - Mach 2
1/72 scale injection-molded plastic kit of the Douglas X-3 Stiletto by Mach 2 Models of France. The Douglas X-3 "Stiletto" was built to investigate the design of an aircraft suitable for sustained supersonic speeds. The X-3 was intended for sustained flight research above Mach 2, but was hampered by use of under-powered Westinghouse J34 turbojet engines - which could not power the aircraft past Mach 1 in level flight. The principle contribution of the X-3 was its data on inertial coupling (roll divergence - a tendency to diverge from the intended flight path). The X-3's first flight was in October 1952 with Douglas test pilot Bill Bridgeman in the cockpit. The X-3 flew 20 times between 1954 and 1956 with Joe Walker at the controls for all 20 of these missions. This kit makes a beautifully detailed model - is in the original box which is in new condition - parts are still on the sprue and decals are as shown in the photos. The kit makes a model about 7 inches long with a wingspan of about 4.5 inches long.

Northrop M2F2/M2F3 - 1:72 - Wings Models
UPGRADED KIT! 1/72 scale vacuform model of the Northrop M2F2, an experimental lifting body aircraft designed to test the concept of a lifting body reentry vehicle. The purpose of the program was not to build an actual useable reentry vehicle, but to verify wind tunnel data and evaluate handling characteristics and pilot/vehicle compatibility. The M2F2 was designed to be launched from the same B-52 that was used for the X-15 launches. Sixteen un-powered test flights were made, beginning on 12 July 1966. Each flight began with a launch from the B-52, followed by a glide to landing. On the sixteenth flight the craft experienced directional instability during the landing flare, touched down with landing gear only partially extended and tumbled several times before coming to rest inverted. The pilot was severely injured, but eventually recovered and resumed flying. The film of this accident was used as the opening sequence for the 1970s television series, "The Six Million Dollar Man". The damaged M2F2 was rebuilt and modified into the M2F3. The M2F3 made its first glide flight on 25 November 1970, its first powered flight on 25 November 1970, and a total of 27 flights over its lifetime. The M2F3 is now in the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian. This kit can be used to build either the M2F2 or M2F3. The kit includes plans, cast resin detail parts including landing gear struts/wheels, detailed cockpit, two crystal clear vacuformed canopies, excellent decals, and additional historical notes on this aircraft. Currently out of production pending mold repair. Expected back in stock Fall 2009.

UPGRADED KIT! 1/72 scale vacuform model of the Northrop HL-10 (Horizontal Landing) experimental lifting body aircraft. The HL-10 came out of the same program as the M2F2 and was not intended as an actual useable reentry vehicle, but a means to verify wind tunnel data and evaluate handling characteristics and pilot/vehicle compatibility. Like the M2F2, the HL-10 was powered by an XLR-11 rocket engine and was designed to be launched from a B-52. The HL-10 made its first test flight on 22 December 1966, and its first rocket-powered flight on 13 November 1967. The HL-10 made a total of 25 rocket powered flights, and now sits atop a pylon at the Dryden Flight Research Facility at Edwards Flight Test Center. This kit has detailed plans/instructions and references for this aircraft, cast resin detail parts including landing gear struts/wheels, detailed cockpit, two crystal clear vacuformed canopies, and excellent decals.

Boeing X-20 DynaSoar Lifting Body - 1:72 - Wings Models
1/72 scale vacuform/resin model of the X-20 Dynasoar experimental aircraft. Officially sanctioned in early 1957, the X-20 program was designed to provide a piloted, maneuverable and recoverable vehicle for conducting experiments in the hypersonic and orbital flight regime. Although a full sized mock-up was built, X-20 program funds were deleted by DOD before the first X-20 vehicle was completed. Several X-20 launch systems were considered including the Titan III ICBM and B-58 bomber. Successes of the Mercury and Gemini space programs suddenly made the X-20 experiment programs redundant and by 1963, the X-20 program was in the final throes of its struggle for survival. The X-20 was to be 35 ft.-04 in. long with a wingspan of 20 ft.-05 in. and capable of piloted recovery after reaching orbital altitudes of 550,000 feet and speeds exceeding 16,500 mph. The kit makes a model about 6.5 inches long with a wingspan of about 3.75 inches. Currently out of production. Expected back in stock Fall 2009.

Martin-Marietta X-23 PRIME Lifting Body - 1:72 - Wings Models
1/72 scale cast resin model of the X-23 PRIME (Precision Recovery Including Maneuvering Entry) designed to collect data pertaining to maneuverable re-entry vehicles and ablative shielding technology. Four X-23's were built by Martin-Marietta - three were launched but only one survived the recovery process. The fourth vehicle was never launched because the first three launched X-23's achieved the programs objects and a fourth launch would have been redundant. The X-23 was 6 ft-07.5 in. long with a wingspan of 4 ft-0 in. and reached orbital altitudes of 500,000 feet and speeds exceeding Mach 24.5. The kit also includes solid cast resin models of the tiny ASSET lifting body and the USSR's Cosmos/Kosmos lifting body. This kit is the ONLY kit currently available for the X-23 PRIME, ASSET & Cosmos Lifting Bodies in ANY scale!

Martin-Marietta X-24A and X-24B Lifting Bodies - 1:72 - Wings Models
1/72 scale vacuform model of the X-24-A and X-24-B experimental lifting bodies. The X-24A was conceived as a manned vehicle to explore the low speed flight characteristics of the maneuverable lift body design. While three basic X-23 vehicles, known as SV-5P's, were built, only one was fully completed, re-designated as the X-24A and flown - vehicle SN 66-13551. During testing, the X-24A flew for 2 hours-54 minutes and 28 seconds and reached speeds of Mach 1.6 and an altitude of 71,400 feet. The X-24B was created by modifying the X-24A by "gloving on" a newer, longer forebody and changes to the aft strake wing panels - it retained the SN of 66-13551. The X-24B made 36 flights reaching speeds of Mach 1.74 and an altitude of 74,130 feet. This kit makes both the X-24A and X-24B versions as separate models and has appropriate decals for both versions. The X-24A makes a model about 4.1 inches long with a wingspan of about 2.5 inches; the X-24B makes a model about 6.1 inches long with a wingspan of about 3 inches.
