Douglas X-3 Stilleto X-plane - 1:48 - Lindberg
1/48 scale plastic injection-molded model kit of the Douglas X-3 Stiletto. The X-3 was intended for sustained flight research above Mach 2, but was hampered by use of under-powered Westinghouse J34 turbojet engines - which could not power the aircraft past Mach 1 in level flight. The principle contribution of the X-3 was its data on inertial coupling (roll divergence) - a tendency to diverge from the intended flight path. The X-3's first flight was in October 1952 with Douglas test pilot Bill Bridgeman in the cockpit. The X-3 flew 20 times between 1954 and 1956 with Joe Walker at the controls for all 20 of these missions. Kit has detailed parts, jet engines, pilot figure & access ladder - authentic decals as shown on box photos.

The Douglas X-3 "Stiletto" was built to investigate the design of an aircraft suitable for sustained supersonic speeds. The X-3 was intended for sustained flight research above Mach 2, but was hampered by use of under-powered Westinghouse J34 turbojet engines -- which could not power the aircraft past Mach 1 in level flight. The principle contribution of the X-3 was its data on inertial coupling (roll divergence)-a tendency to diverge from the intended flight path. Bell X-2 research aircraft - 1:40 - Wings Models
1/40 scale model of America's first successful throttleable rocket-powered experimental test aircraft: the Bell X-2. Two X-2's were built; the first was accidentally destroyed during in-flight fueling; the second X-2 began its glide flights in August 1955 and made its first powered flight in November 1955. The Bell X-2 made history on 23 July 1956, when LTC Frank Everest flew it to 1900.4 mph; and later on 07 September 1956, when CPT Iven Kincheloe flew it to an altitude of 126,000 feet; and again on 27 September 1956, when CPT Milburn Apt flew it to Mach 3.196 (2094 mph). CPT Apt was later killed and the X-2 destroyed when the X-2 went out of control. This kit includes excellent plans and detail photos/drawings, has decals for both X-2 models, 2 clear vacuform canopies, and excellent cast metal detail parts. (This kit is currently unavailable. We will be re-releasing it in 1:48 scale this summer (2009) - in the meantime, please see our 1/72 scale kit for this aircraft, Wings Models WM72096.)

Bell XS-1 - 1:48 - Wings Models
1/48 scale model of Bell's "first generation" X-1 aircraft (these X-1's were initially designated as XS-1 but later were re-designated X-1). Three aircraft were built - SN's 46-062 to 46-064 - with the first glide flight occurring on 25 January 1946. The first generation X-1's have the smooth, tapered flush cockpit area & nose and are smaller in size than the later X-1's. Aircraft length is 30 ft-11 in., wingspan is 28 ft. 0 in. and the max speed attained was Mach 2.44. Aircraft 46-062 is now in the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. This is an all resin kit with delicately engraved panel lines and other surface details; it has great decals that include the B-29 "mother-ship" nose logo and tail number! Instructions include information on converting a 1/48 scale B-29 kit into the X-1's mother-ship. With a little effort, this kit can make a museum-quality model-makes a model about 7.73 inches long with a 7.0 inch width. This is the only kit currently available for the Bell XS-1 in ANY scale. Expected to be available for purchase in Summer 2009.

Bell X-1A/B research aircraft - 1:48 - Wings Models
1/72 scale vacuform model kit. The second generation X-1's were to investigate speeds above Mach 2 and altitudes of 90,000 feet. They retained the same wing, horizontal tail and engine as the first generation, but the fuselage was entirely new - longer with increased fuel capacity, a raised canopy for better visibility and an improved cockpit. The initial contract called for 4 X-1 aircraft, X-1A - SN 48-1384, X-1B - SN 48-1385, X-1C was never built and X1-D - SN 48-1386. The X-1D was delivered first in July 1951, but during its second flight, an explosion/flames in the engine section caused it to be jettisoned from the "mother-ship" on 22 August 1951, with a resulting crash in the desert - it was not re-built. The X-1A was delivered in January 1953. The aircraft made 25 flights during the next two years but it was also jettisoned over the desert on 08 August, 1955, following an in-flight explosion. The third aircraft, the X-1B was delivered in June 1954. This aircraft made many flights with the last one being made on 23 January 1958. The X-1-B is on display at the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. This kit contains vacuformed conversion parts and nose logo and tail-number decals to convert a 1/48 scale B-29 kit into an X-1 "mother ship". The kit has resin/vacuform parts and, with a little effort, can make a museum-quality model; it makes a model about 9 inches long with a wingspan of about 7 inches.

Boeing X-20 DynaSoar Lifting Body - 1:72 - Wings Models
1/72 scale vacuform/resin model of the X-20 Dynasoar experimental aircraft. Officially sanctioned in early 1957, the X-20 program was designed to provide a piloted, maneuverable and recoverable vehicle for conducting experiments in the hypersonic and orbital flight regime. Although a full sized mock-up was built, X-20 program funds were deleted by DOD before the first X-20 vehicle was completed. Several X-20 launch systems were considered including the Titan III ICBM and B-58 bomber. Successes of the Mercury and Gemini space programs suddenly made the X-20 experiment programs redundant and by 1963, the X-20 program was in the final throes of its struggle for survival. The X-20 was to be 35 ft.-04 in. long with a wingspan of 20 ft.-05 in. and capable of piloted recovery after reaching orbital altitudes of 550,000 feet and speeds exceeding 16,500 mph. The kit makes a model about 6.5 inches long with a wingspan of about 3.75 inches. Currently out of production. Expected back in stock Fall 2009.

Martin-Marietta X-23 PRIME Lifting Body - 1:72 - Wings Models
1/72 scale cast resin model of the X-23 PRIME (Precision Recovery Including Maneuvering Entry) designed to collect data pertaining to maneuverable re-entry vehicles and ablative shielding technology. Four X-23's were built by Martin-Marietta - three were launched but only one survived the recovery process. The fourth vehicle was never launched because the first three launched X-23's achieved the programs objects and a fourth launch would have been redundant. The X-23 was 6 ft-07.5 in. long with a wingspan of 4 ft-0 in. and reached orbital altitudes of 500,000 feet and speeds exceeding Mach 24.5. The kit also includes solid cast resin models of the tiny ASSET lifting body and the USSR's Cosmos/Kosmos lifting body. This kit is the ONLY kit currently available for the X-23 PRIME, ASSET & Cosmos Lifting Bodies in ANY scale!

Martin-Marietta X-24A and X-24B Lifting Bodies - 1:72 - Wings Models
1/72 scale vacuform model of the X-24-A and X-24-B experimental lifting bodies. The X-24A was conceived as a manned vehicle to explore the low speed flight characteristics of the maneuverable lift body design. While three basic X-23 vehicles, known as SV-5P's, were built, only one was fully completed, re-designated as the X-24A and flown - vehicle SN 66-13551. During testing, the X-24A flew for 2 hours-54 minutes and 28 seconds and reached speeds of Mach 1.6 and an altitude of 71,400 feet. The X-24B was created by modifying the X-24A by "gloving on" a newer, longer forebody and changes to the aft strake wing panels - it retained the SN of 66-13551. The X-24B made 36 flights reaching speeds of Mach 1.74 and an altitude of 74,130 feet. This kit makes both the X-24A and X-24B versions as separate models and has appropriate decals for both versions. The X-24A makes a model about 4.1 inches long with a wingspan of about 2.5 inches; the X-24B makes a model about 6.1 inches long with a wingspan of about 3 inches.
