CM48004	$17.50	GeeBee Sport Racer - 1:48 - Testors** 1/48 plastic injection-molded scale model of the radically designed GeeBee Super Sportster from the air-racing days of the Thirties. The GeeBee proved the validity of its design by setting a land-plane speed record (at the time) of 296.3 mph. Designed and built by Granville Brothers Aircraft, the chubby GeeBee was a racing favorite of Gen. Jimmy Doolittle. With a wing span of only 25 feet, a length of 17-3/4 feet, and a huge radial engine, the GeeBee was difficult to fly because of the short-coupled flight control surfaces. The kit is highly detailed & comes with the famous "eleven dice" decals. This kit is new and in the original box which is in good condition. The Wings Models kit will include cast resin landing gear struts, wheels, props, engines, engine cowlings, etc, two crystal clear vacuformed canopies and appropriate decals. 1/53 scale model of Amelia Earhart's famous "Around the World" airplane that she was flying when she disappeared in July 1937. Accompanied by navigator Fred Noonan, Ms Earhart took off from New Guinea bound for Howland Island -- a distance of 2550 miles. Although the aircraft carried ample fuel for the flight, the fliers never arrived and radioed "30 minutes of fuel left". They are thought to have missed the island and gone down in the ocean without a trace. This all-metal low-winged with retractable landing gear L-10E was made in July 1936 and was powered by two Pratt & Whitney 550 hp Wasp engines. The model is new, complete, very detailed, and in the original box which is in good condition. It comes with decals for Ms Earhart's airplane plus US Navy and US Coast Guard decals. CM48008	$17.50	Ryan ST/PT-20 - 1:48 - Testors** 1/48 plastic injection-molded scale model of the Ryan ST/PT-20 trainer airplane of the 1930s and early 1940s. Many pilots of that era - including many WWII pilots - learned to fly in the PT-20 (the PT-20 is virtually identical to the PT-16). The 125 hp in-line engine, dual open-air cockpits, headrests and natty wheel fairings epitomize an aviation era now gone. The ST first flew on 08 June 1934 and became an instant classic. The kit is new, is unassembled (all parts are there in an unopened plastic package), is in the original box which is in good condition, comes with US Army Air Corps and Netherlands Air Force decals and can be built with pontoons or wheels. The model is injection -molded plastic with resin & etched brass super-details -- by Czech Models-kit # 4806 -- is in the original box -- parts are in a factory sealed bag -- decals as shown. This kit can be made into a superb model! The XP-55 was ready for flight testing in July 1943; it displayed satisfactory handling characteristics at all but low speeds when it became overly sensitive. Poor engine cooling and the unresolved low speed stability problems led the Army to conclude the XP-55 would not be an effective fighter aircraft, so the XP-55 never got past the testing stage. The XP-56 was built for the R-40C un-conventional fighter design competition -- 2 prototype aircraft were built. Powered by a R-2800-29 engine turning dual contra-rotating props, the aircraft had wingspan was 42' 06" with a length of 27' 06" and original 1942 design speed estimates of a top speed of 465 mph at 25,000 ft altitude. Because of engine cooling problems, actual flight performance was less than other fighter aircraft of the late WW II time-frame -- consequently, the program was eventually cancelled. Aircraft #2 is stored at the Smithsonian. This kit makes a medium-sized model with an 11 inch wingspan and a length of 7.5 inches. Designed as a long range reconnaissance aircraft, its success brought about modification as night-fighter to defend against the US's night bombing raids. In the night-fighter role, the J1N1 used radar to locate targets and then attacked using 4 fixed position 20 mm cannons firing at an upward angle of 30 degrees. With the technique of flying below and to the side of a target, US bombers were generally not aware of the attacker's presence until they started receiving cannon fire! The Irving was fairly successful against B-24 bombers, but was much less successful against B-29 bombers. The J1N1 had a wingspan of 55'-08.5", a length of 41'-10.75", a range of 2,348 miles and a max speed of 315 mph. The kit is in the original box which is in good condition. XXI fighter plane, the Netherlands' famous World War II fighter aircraft. Although not outstanding in any category, the D.XXI achieved air victories over the best German fighter planes. The D.XXI first saw combat during the "Winter War" when Russia invaded tiny Finland on 30 November 1939. By the time the war ended 105 days later, the Finns had scored 119 aerial victories with a loss of only 9 D.XXI's. Five D.XXI's were still in service in 1951. One restored replica D.XXI is on permanent display in the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum at Soesterberg, Netherlands. CM48108	$17.50	Douglas X-3 Stilleto X-plane - 1:48 - Lindberg** 1/48 scale plastic injection-molded model kit of the Douglas X-3 Stiletto. The X-3 was intended for sustained flight research above Mach 2, but was hampered by use of under-powered Westinghouse J34 turbojet engines - which could not power the aircraft past Mach 1 in level flight. The principle contribution of the X-3 was its data on inertial coupling (roll divergence) - a tendency to diverge from the intended flight path. The X-3's first flight was in October 1952 with Douglas test pilot Bill Bridgeman in the cockpit. The X-3 flew 20 times between 1954 and 1956 with Joe Walker at the controls for all 20 of these missions.
