CM72165	$14.95	Heinkel He-178 V1 - 1:72 - Condor** 1/72 scale injection-molded plastic model of the Heinkel He-178 V1, the world's first jet powered aircraft, by Condor Models of the Czech Republic. The He-178 carved itself a place in aviation history by being the world's first aircraft to fly using turbojet power when it reached an impressive 393 mph on its maiden flight on 27 August 1939. Despite its obvious potential, RLM (Luftwaffe) officials were skeptical, so the jet-powered aircraft idea was shelved and not resurrected until late WW2. The He-178 passed forever into history in 1943 when RAF bombs destroyed the Berlin Air Museum where it was stored. This kit has no decals because the prototype had no insignia/markings. The kit has photo-etched detail parts and makes a small-sized model with a 4 inch wingspan and a fuselage about 4 inches long. The D.XXI first saw combat during the "Winter War" when Russia invaded tiny Finland on 30 November 1939. By the time that war ended 105 days later, the Finns had scored 119 aerial victories with a loss of only 9 D.XXIs. Although not outstanding in any category, the Ro.57 delivered good performance when built in 1938. By the time it was put into front-line service in 1942, it was out-moded and out-classed because it was under-powered and lacked maneuverability. Shortly after being placed in combat service, its inadequacies as an interceptor caused it to be re-assigned to ground attack and dive-bomber roles where it was moderately successful. CM72171	$12.95	North American XF-107A - 1:72 - AirModel** 1/72 scale VACUFORM model of North American's USAF XF-107 experimental fighter aircraft. The F-107 was to be a development of the highly successful F-100 fighter, but design problems eventually required a completely new aircraft. The first F-107A took off on its maiden flight on 10 September 1956 at Edwards AFB, with NAA test pilot Bob Baker at the controls and went supersonic on its first flight. The F-107 found itself in direct competition with the Republic F-105 Thunderchief for production orders. In March 1957, the USAF decided to go with the F-105, and the F-107 was relegated to aerodynamic testing duties. This make a medium sized model with a wing-span of 6-1/4 inches and a fuselage length of 7 inches. The kit does not include any decals or cast resin/metal detail parts. The XFL-1 was the carrier-version of Bell Aircraft's moderately successful P-39 fighter; essentially a P-39 fighter with two main landing gear, a tail wheel and an arresting hook for carrier operations. It first flew in January 1940 and was turned over to the Army Air Corps for testing in September 1941. Like the P-39, it was hampered by an under-powered engine and coolant over-heating. Subsequently, it was deemed unsuitable for carrier operations, and the prototype never went into production. The XN-9M was a single place, two-pusher props, flying wing research aircraft which eventually evolved into the XB-35/XB-49 and B-2 flying wing bombers. Four XN-9M aircraft were built-each differing slightly in control surfaces, radios and electrical equipment. With a wingspan of 60.0 ft, a length of 17.79 feet, a range of 500 miles and a max speed of 258 mph, this concept fore-runner of today's B-2 stealth bomber must have been a sight to behold in the early 1940s. Although the Ki-32 suffered from engine problems (it was liquid-cooled), 846 of them were produced and the aircraft saw extensive use in Japanese campaigns in China through 1941. Wingspan was 49'-02.5 "; length 38'-02.25 "; max speed 263 mph; range 1218 miles. Armament was two 7.7mm machineguns, and bomb load of up to 992 lb. Although not outstanding in any category, the D.XXI achieved air victories over the best German fighter planes. The D.XXI first saw combat during the "Winter War" when Russia invaded tiny Finland on 30 November 1939. By the time the war ended 105 days later, the Finns had scored 119 aerial victories with a loss of only 9 D.XXI's. Five D.XXI's were still in service in 1951. One restored replica D.XXI is on permanent display in the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum at Soesterberg, Netherlands. Top speed of the D.XXI was 286 mph; wing span was 36'-01" and the length was 26'-11". CM72181	$39.95	Lockheed Air Express Model 3 Airliner - 1:72 - Planet Models** 1/72 scale hollow-cast RESIN model of the Lockheed Air Express Model 3 Airliner of the late 1920s. Redesigned from the Lockheed "Vega" by Jack Northrop, the Model 3 was similar to the "Vega" except the wings were "parasol" mounted on inverted V struts. Only eight Model 3 airliners were built - they flew for Western Air Express, Pan American, American Airways and Texas Air Transport plus private owners. Aircraft serial number 75 was eventually sold to Gilmore Oil Co. - flown by Roscoe Turner, it was nicknamed "Gilmore Lion" and set the USA east-to-west transcontinental speed record on 30 May, 1930. First flown in 1940, the Curtiss C-46 "Commando" was used extensively in the Pacific theater during WWII and was a mainstay flying the "hump" between India and China. With a top speed of 265 mph and a range of 1200 miles, war surplus C-46's were bought by many airlines in both the US and Far East. I rode a Flying Tiger Lines C-46 to Japan in 1960 while coming home from Korea. This model comes with Flying Tiger Lines, WWII US Army Air Corps & Chinese Air Force decals. The Douglas X-3 "Stiletto" was built to investigate the design of an aircraft suitable for sustained supersonic speeds. The X-3 was intended for sustained flight research above Mach 2, but was hampered by use of under-powered Westinghouse J34 turbojet engines - which could not power the aircraft past Mach 1 in level flight. The principle contribution of the X-3 was its data on inertial coupling (roll divergence - a tendency to diverge from the intended flight path). The X-3's first flight was in October 1952 with Douglas test pilot Bill Bridgeman in the cockpit. The X-3 flew 20 times between 1954 and 1956 with Joe Walker at the controls for all 20 of these missions. The kit makes a model of Amelia Earhart's famous "Around the World" airplane that she was flying when she disappeared in July 1937. Accompanied by navigator Fred Noonan, Ms Earhart took off from New Guinea bound for Howland Island -- a distance of 2550 miles. Although the aircraft carried ample fuel for the flight, the fliers never arrived and radioed "30 minutes of fuel left". They are thought to have missed the island and gone down in the ocean without a trace. This all-metal low-winged with retractable landing gear L-10 was made in July 1936 and was powered by two Pratt & Whitney 550 hp Wasp engines. Powered by a R-2800-29 engine turning dual contra-rotating props, the aircraft had wingspan of 42' 06" with a length of 27' 06" and original 1942 design speed estimates of a top speed of 465 mph at 25,000 ft altitude. Because of engine cooling problems, actual flight performance was less than other fighter aircraft of the late WW II time-frame - consequently, the program was eventually cancelled.
